谢斌，暨南大学经济与社会研究院副教授，博士毕业于美国新泽西州立罗格斯大学，主要研究领域为劳动经济学、经济史、发展经济学，研究成果发表于Journal of Development Economics，Journal of Comparative Economics，Explorations in Economic History, Journal of Policy Analysis and Management 和《经济学（季刊）》等国内外期刊，主持国家自然科学基金青年项目。

讲座内容

This study examines the effect of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 in the United States on the incidence of rebellions in late imperial China. Using a county-level panel dataset of rebellions, we find that counties that were ancestral hometowns of overseas Chinese witnessed a marked increase in rebellious activity after the Act, relative to bordering counties that were not. Mechanism analysis points to two channels: the intensification of an anti-Manchu grievance the Act revived among overseas Chinese, and by the inflow of new political ideas returning students carried back from abroad. We find no evidence that the results are driven by demographic pressure from migration barriers, political mobilization among traditional elites, or other major political shocks of the period.
