We conduct a field experiment using triplets of resumes to estimate how occupational certification levels affect employer callback decisions and how these effects vary across applicants and jobs. Advanced certifications increase callback rates by 42% relative to basic certifications, whereas intermediate certifications yield modest or insignificant gains. These effects are stronger among applicants with stronger educational backgrounds, suggesting that certifications reinforce existing advantages in employer screening. Certifications also partially substitute for work experience, benefiting recent graduates and being valued more in vacancies that do not require prior experience. In addition, advanced certifications improve access to vacancies offered by larger, publicly listed firms, and firms in the financial sector, located in top-tier cities, and offering higher pay. Together, the results provide causal evidence that certification levels influence employer screening at the resume stage and shape access to job opportunities.
